Collection: Silver fox

The Silver fox is the melanistic version of the red fox species (Vulpes vulpes). Along with the Red and Gold fox, it's the most common type of mutation fox to find in captivity. The type started out almost completely black but because of selection of breeding animals for light guard hairs, almost all captive bred Silver foxes now have pale guard hairs. Silver foxes carrying the Alaska gene (needed to breed Cross foxes) used to be almost brown which is considered an undesirable trait in the fur industry, but nowadays the two types can barely be distinguished from eachother and dna testing is required to find out if the fox carries the Alaska gene.
