Coyote

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are canids from North America. They can look similar to the golden jackal we have here in Europe, with coyotes generally being bigger in size. Since it's not possible to import wild wolves into the European Union for commercial purposes due to them being CITES A listed, coyotes are often used as a substitute species. 

Coyote fur color and texture varies greatly depending on where the animal came from. The pale, fluffier western coyotes are valued higher by the fur industry. Color mutations exist, like black, white, red, black and tan as well as brindle. Over the years these color mutations have become increasingly expensive to purchase and they rarely show up anymore at fur auctions because trappers know the taxidermy market will pay a premium for these animals. 

Contrary to what is sometimes claimed online, coyotes are not raised on fur farms at all. While coyotes are bred in captivity, it's done to sell the pups as pets. Coyote fur is at the moment not an expensive fur, with most of my cost coming from import fees and tanning. During the days of the well known Canada Goose parka hype, coyote fur fetched a premium. It's however not financially possible to make any money on a farmed coyote and the species is abundant in the wild, so the species is not farmed for fur at all. Wild coyotes are still captured alive in some states to use for training dogs or to get urine for trapping lures.
