Collection: Skunk

The striped skunk (Mephites mephites), often just called skunk, is a small black and white omnivore. Sometimes they’re still grouped together with mustelids, but they’re actually their own little group. 

Skunks are very widespread and are thus considered Least Concerned on the IUCN list. The black and white fur has been used for many years and has a pretty bold and striking appearance. Generally, the more white a skunk has the higher its value. 

The animals are very stinky and to tan the pelt correctly you do need to have some skill. The fur needs to be cleaned extremely well to get rid of odor, and a special softening mixture needs to be applied to soften the leather and fur. I’ve handled quite a few ‘crunchy’ feeling skunks, no good for anything besides hanging on your wall. 

The skunks I’ve imported have been tanned expertly by a professional tannery. The fur is glossy and soft and the leather supple and clean. I only import the top two grades, meaning the pelts will always be of good quality.
