Ringtail

The ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) is a small mammal native to the southern US and Mexico. The small animal is related to raccoons, though with its black and white banded tail you’d think it was related to lemurs.

The species is quite rare in the fur trade, with only a few states allowing some animals to be harvested. The fur is soft, but not very long and the pelts are small so the animal is mostly sought after by taxidermists. It’s difficult and costly to purchase whole ringtails because of their rarity and uncommon appearance.
